Media Representation of Elderly in the Czech Press: Changes in the Context of the COVID-19 Pandemic

The bachelor thesis addresses the media representation of elderly in the Czech press and its transformation before, during, and "after" the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic was a crucial period for the media representation of elderly, as seniors were identified as one of the most at-risk groups, age became the main determining variable of risk, and there was a great wave of ageism. The research was conducted using quantitative content analysis, and media articles (n=450) were manually coded. The chi-square test was used to evaluate statistical significance. The main finding is that in all periods, aging is associated more with negative sentiment, and during the pandemic, there were statistically significant changes in its representation. Older people were significantly less associated with positive sentiment during this period, and there was a considerable increase in ambivalent sentiment (positive and negative at the same time). During the pandemic, elderly were most associated with the theme of help and security, where seniors were portrayed as passive, sick, and incompetent, and therefore must rely on other active members of society. "We're here, we're queer, get used to it!" Representation of Particular Isssues of LGBT+ Community in TV Series after 2000

The diploma thesis focuses on selected specific issues that LGBTQ people (lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transsexuals, and other queer people) face due to their different non- heteronormative sexual and gender identities. Attention is paid specifically to issues of discrimination, stereotyping, partnership (marriage vs. registered partnership), parenthood, attributed promiscuity, and HIV / AIDS. The author focuses on fiction series broadcast between 2000 and 2021, which deals with queer topis and includes LGBTQ characters in the main or supporting roles, focusing on ways of depicting these characters and reflecting on selected issues they experience due to their identity. In foreign series such as Glee, Modern Family, Orange Is the New Black, Pose, Tales of the City, Sex Education, The Politician, It's a Sin and in the Czech series Ulice and MOST! the ways in which the series presents LGBTQ characters are analysed, in what discourse they are talked about and what effect these depictions may have on the majority heterosexual cisgender viewer. The thesis also provides an overview of the most common narrative archetypes of LGBTQ characters appearing in media production. These are also supplemented by examples of characters from the series of the last 20 years. Through a critical analysis of selected series and their reception, the author tries to point out the importance of portraying people with different sexual and gender identities and the influence of this television representation on the formation of opinions and attitudes towards LGBTQ people.

This bachelor's thesis, titled Stereotypical portrayals of Native Americans in Lynne Reid Banks's The Indian in the Cupboard, focuses on the phenomenon of stereotypical portrayals of Native Americans in Lynne Reid Banks's book The Indian in the Cupboard. The theoretical part of the thesis is devoted to the topics of stereotype and ethnocentrism with a focus on Native Americans. It also includes a brief outline of the historical development of literary works concerning Native Americans and discusses the importance of accuracy in children's literature. The practical part focuses on an analysis of particular stereotypes present in the book and criticism concerning the book. Portrayal of Native Americans in American Cinema in 1980s and 1990s

My work deals with the process of displaying of the North American Indian in the American cinematography. It describes the development, transformations and stereotypes in this process from the very beginning until the end of the nineties. In detail it deals with the Indian-thematized filmmaking in the 80s and 90s and it emphasizes, according to the author, the most important Indian movies. The focus point of the study lies in the analysis of two movies Powwow Highway and Smoke Signals, which were created by the Indian production in the late 80s and 90s. The aim of the work is, with the help of the analysis, to answer the question "Were the Indian actors and directors essential for more realistic portrayal of American Indians in American cinematography?" After analyzing the mentioned movies and presenting the arguments to this question, the conclusion is affirmative.

From peace to Crimea: Russia's media image in Czech commentary in years 2013-2014

Bachelor's thesis titled From peace to Crimea: Russia's media image in Czech commentary in years 2013-2014 analyzes the form of commentaries related to Russian federation and endeavors to capture a transformation of medial view on the country in the context of Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, conflict in Ukraine and all previous events. The theoretical background of the whole thesis is based on the theories of social and medial construction of reality such as agenda setting, framing and gate-keeping and deals with stereotyping as well. An extensive chapter is devoted to Czech-Russian relations in a time span longer than a century, presents important points in shared history and mentions events which radically influenced international history in the past. The analytic part applies the method of quantitative content analysis and utilizes elements of qualitative content analysis. The presented media image of Russia is based on examination of eight variables (frequency, media, extent, author, event, topic, evaluation of Russia's role and stereotypes).

Media Representation of Prague ZOO

The main aim of the bachelor thesis "Media Representation of Prague ZOO" is to analyze and describe the media representation of this institution in daily newspapers BLESK, MF DNES and Pravo in the period from 1st January 2009 to 31st December 2011. The theoretical part of this thesis deals with media concepts and theories, primarily with concept of representation, stereotyping and media construction of reality. This part also serves as a platform, which anchors the following practical part. In practical part, first, I introduce the method of quantitative content analysis and the specific procedure I have chosen. Then I present the results of my research and their interpretation. The data evaluation confirms the main hypothesis, that the media representation of Prague ZOO is associated with the family of lowland gorillas, which lives there. We can say, that representation of Prague ZOO in media is created in very stereotypical framework, which has not changed in the monitored period and we can not expect any change in the near future.

The transformation of presentation of the middle east populationin post-9/11 american films

The master thesis named The Transformation of Presentation of the Middle East Population in Post-9/11 American Films aims to closely analyze eight chosen mainstream American films with the help of the combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. The plot of the observed films has to be placed in the Middle East, picture terrorism or contain the Arabs or Muslims as characters. On the basis of a wide range of criteria and the final comparison, the thesis focuses on the comparison of the Hollywood movies which were created before and after the terrorist attacks in New York in 2001. The theoretical chapters are dedicated to the introduction of the social construction of reality, stereotyping and one-dimensional description of the Arabs in Hollywood films and mainly to the deep introduction of West and Islamic culture, not only from the historic but also cultural and valuable point of view. The applied methodology follows after. The detailed analysis of the chosen films is accompanied by photographs and excerpts directly from the films to help readers to understand the differences as much as possible. The image of television journalist in american television series (from Mary Tyler Moore Show to Newsroom)

The objective of this master thesis The image of television journalist in American television series is to unveil personality traits of main characters in five selected American series during five decades (from the beginning of the 1970s to present) by means of combination of interpretative reading and semiotic (visual) analysis, and by that interpret representation of journalists. Subsequently the typologies of journalistic characters by Brian McNair and Joe Saltzman are used to categorize 27 central figures to types or stereorypes. Majority of characters combined more different types but it could be stated that all images of journalists were positive - possibly due to bigger popularity among viewers. Simultaneously it is neccesary to point out that characters across analysed series classified to same categories are not fully identical - characters show enough resemblance for type identification but similarities are outweighed by differences.
